The Impact of TikTok Ban in Nepal: How People Lost Numerous Earning Opportunities

The government of Nepal banned the TikTok App in Nepal on 13 November 2023. The TikTok app provides various opportunities for users to earn money online. Nepalese users also got those opportunities, but now they are gone.  However, the Nepalese users of TikTok have also lost various opportunities.

TikTok is a short video-sharing app, a widely used platform, which is typically filled with enjoyment. The users or TikTok content creators effortlessly create humorous videos using soundtracks, face filters, original music, beauty effects, stickers, or/and more features. Youngster captures the funny moments and shares is on them with friends. TikTok app is also used as a digital marketing platform and earning app.

TikTok was one of the most popular social media platforms in Nepal, with a high rate of interaction and consumption. It is a platform for entertainment as well as a way to grow an online business, and make money.

It is not only related to the income sources of Tiktok’s users but also affects the national economy. Here are some common ways to earn from TikTok, where Nepalese user has lost;

1. Selling Merchandise (Goods and Services): If you have a dedicated fan base, you can create and sell your own goods or services through TikTok. This can include branded or non-branded clothing, accessories, cosmetics products, bag items, fancies, or any other products related to your content. Many Nepalese small business people and small and medium-sized enterprises are losing their business opportunities.

2. Influencer Marketing: As an influencer, TikTok content creator can collaborate with brands and promote their products or services through sponsored content. Brands may reach out to them directly or they can join influencer marketing platforms to find collaboration opportunities. Nepalese TikTok content creator also lost their jobs such as influencer marketing in the TikTok platform.

3. Livestreaming: TikTok allows users to go live and interact with their audience in real time. During live streams, viewers can send virtual gifts, which can be converted into real money. TikTok also offers a Creator Fund program where popular creators can earn a share of the revenue generated from livestreams. There are many Nepalese TikTok users, who made lots of money with this feature, and now they are also losing their jobs after banned TikTok in Nepal.

4. Creator Marketplace: TikTok has a Creator Marketplace where brands can connect with creators for paid partnerships. By joining the marketplace, they can showcase their skills and attract brand collaborations. Some Nepalese TikTok users also used and now lost this opportunity.

5. Affiliate Marketing: Affiliate Marketing is a common earning stream through online platforms. They can earn commissions or percentages by promoting products or services through affiliate marketing. In Nepal, there are many brands, that offer affiliates marketing or referral programs and paid commissions or one-time payments. They can earn a certain percentage of the sales generated through your referrals or by affiliate links in your TikTok videos or bio. Many people lost this opportunity after banning TikTok in Nepal.

6. Free advertisement: Many small business people from the grassroots and remote areas, create content to promote their products goods, and services for the purpose of advertisement for all-time free. They easily share these promotional videos movements or shop descriptions in the TikTok app. Now they lost the free advertisement platform in Nepal.

It’s important to note that building a successful presence on the TikTok platform, it requires consistent work, effort, engaging content, and building loyal followers.

However, in Nepal after being banned TikTok officially by the Government decision, users, content creators, marketing influencers, and small business people lost their earnings and making money opportunities.
